What is Kakuro?

What is the difference between Cross-Sums and Kakuro?

In short: There is no difference.  "Cross-Sums" was the original English name for the puzzle. "Kakuro" is simply the Japanese name that became the international standard.   "Cross-Sums" underwent a rebranding that made it sound more distinctand exotic to an international audience. Today, the names are used interchangeably, though "Kakuro" is the term you will most likely find on the covers of modern puzzle books.

Where did Kakuro originate?

While many associate logic puzzles exclusively with Japan, Kakuro actually has its roots in the United States. It was first introduced by Dell Magazines in 1950 under the name Cross-Sums. It was created by Jacob E. Funk, a Canadian architect.  The puzzle was eventually imported to Japan by the publisher Nikoli in the 1980s. There, it was renamed Kakkuro Sanso(a contraction of kasan kurosu, meaning "addition cross").   Over time, the name was shortened to Kakuro, and it exploded in popularity, eventually returning to the West to become a global staple in newspapers and puzzle books alongside Sudoku.

What are the rules of Kakuro?

The objective of Kakuro is to fill all the empty white squares with digits from 1 to 9so that the sum of each horizontal and vertical block matches the "clue" number provided at the start of the row or column.   There are two non-negotiable rules to maintain the integrityof the puzzle: 1) The Sum Rule:The digits in each continuous line must add up exactly to the "Clue" shown in the triangle. 2) The No-Repetition Rule:A digit cannot be used more than once in the same sum. For example, if a horizontal sum of 6 spans three squares, you could use 1, 2, and 3, but you could notuse 2, 2, and 2.

A: Kakuro "Gimmies" refer to clue/cell combinations that have only one solution. Generally, the reason there is only one solution is that any alternatives require a repeated number, exceed the clue or are too small for the clue. The table below shows some examples Although these "Gimmies" are the only combination of numbers the solve the clue -  the order of the numbers in the cells needs to be deciphered.
